First Semester Closure & Social Studies Update

The first semester comes to a close for the 5th-8th grades at St. Sylvester for 2010.  It was an exciting first semester for students in and out of the classroom.  Our flag football team finished with a 6-3 record and defeated both of the top teams in the CAMS League for the first time since joining.

The 8th grade class completed their coursework and passed the United States and the State of Illinois Constitution exams respectively.  For the first time I used alternative curriculum rather than the standard Illinois Blue Books.  Each lesson was hands on, small group, performance based or interactive and the students enjoyed these activities.  The 7th graders worked on a scroll to celebrate Advent while creating advertising posters for European settlers looking for a fresh start.  The 6th grade, studying World History created wonderful travel brochures for Ancient Mesopotamia.  Finally, the 5th grade class made sports related pennants for cities in early colonial America that represented traditional and historical political or labor related positions.

To start the 3rd quarter I will be leading a number of after school clubs.  Ms. Fruge' and I will be starting a student council together for the 8th grade class.  I will also be creating a Wii Club that will consist of some contests and physical activity with the students as well as a Geography Club that will discuss different cultures, current events and environmental features of different countries.  Many College Prep high schools have AP Geography courses and this will assist students as they prepare for their futures.  If I can squeeze it in each week I will also start a German Club.  Having taken German in High School and in College along with a personal family history, this club has me truly excited to explore a new language with the students.
